Mongolian Gull Larus [vegae/cachinnans] mongolicus

This form is scarce, but is not really rare in Japan. Overall structure looks similar to Vega Gull, but on average it tends to be slightly longish, and sometimes recalls Caspian Gull. In adult winter, head streaks tend to be thin, restricted, and create 'white-headed' expression from a distance. Gray of upperparts looks same as Vega Gulls or slightly paler. Molt is about 1 month earlier than in Vega Gull. Black markings on primary tend to be extensive than Vega Gull on average. Individuals that have 7 black-marked primaries have a majority. 1st winter is often unmistakable by distinctly whitish, contrasty overall appearance, and shows narrow tail band. Molt and wear tend to be earlier than in Vega Gull, and often show fully replaced scapulars and heavily worn coverts/tertials in winter. However , most characteristics can be highly variable in both Vega and Mongolian Gull, and greatly overlap.  Additionally, identification for adults usually gets more difficult in breeding  plumage. Although we select reliable individuals here as best we can, note that identifications for this form often tend to be tentative especially in adults.  Click here to see some pussles.
