1st.winter Slaty-backed Gull Larus schistisagus Choshi Chiba Japan, January 13th. 2001

This rather fresh 1st.winter shows very different
progress in molt compared with the individual on the right
and these individuals in October and November.
A very worn and faded 1st.winter, nearly 1st.summer.
Individuals like this usually appear from mid-winter to spring.
This another late-molt bird shows only four new 1stwinter feathers in scapulars.
These two 1st.winter birds show very different look.
Individuals like the rear bird in this photo are sometimes confused with Vega Gulls.
