2nd winter
Mongolian Gull  Larus (?) mongolicus

Mar. 8th 2013 Tokyo Imperial Palace, Japan

Note the white head-breast, rough texture of wing coverts and contrasty overall coloration. The streaking on hindneck is thin and restricted.

The Mongolian Gull in center with 2 Vega Gulls of the same age.

Note the narrow tail band.

The underwing shows sharp spotts on the white ground color.

For comparison: Unidentified 2nd winter gull (bleached Vega Gull?) on the same date. At first glance, this also looks like a Mongolian Gull. But the overall coloration looks less contrasty, and some soft smudges are visible on the hindneck to breast side.

And the tail band is broader.
