1st winter
Kumlien's Iceland Gull
Larus glaucoides kumlieni @
March 30th 2009 Choshi Chiba Japan

This bird is the fourth bird in this winter ("Yongou") found on March 27th . It was seen at very close range.

Comparison to a bleached Thayer's Gull on the right. This shows not only colorations but also typical structural tendencies of both in similar postures. Note the large eye and rounded head of the Kumlien's Iceland Gull.

Glaucous, Glaoucous-winged and Black-tailed Gull are present in the background.

Comparison to the same Thayer's Gull. Note their extent of dark parts on outer primaries and tail.

"Yongou" among Vega and Kamchatka Gulls.

Compare the bill size with the Glaucous-winged Gull.
