2nd winter, probable female
Glaucous-winged Gull Larus glaucescens
January 13th 2004 Choshi Chiba Japan
This is probably the cutest Glaucous-winged Gull I have ever seen. The bill looked very slim, and the head looked rounded shape. The face impression resembled Thayer's Gull or Kumlien's Gull. But the colorations were perfect to be a Glaucous-winged Gull, and the primary projection beyond the tail seemed too short to be normal Thayer's/Kumlien's Gull.
How cute it is!
Note the slim bill and rounded head shape. I suppose the primary projection beyond the tail would be at the short extreme even if it is within the range of 'Kumlien's Gull'.
Left to right: The Glaucous-winged Gull, Vega Gull, Slaty-backed Gull.
The bill length doesn't seem to be particularly short.
Note the perfect coloration for Glaucous-winged Gull.
A 'normal' Glaucous-winged Gull for comparison. Note the obviously thick bill, and less rounded head.
