Adult winter Thayer's Gull
Feb. 20th 2002 Choshi Chiba Japan

This individual is a new face in Choshi, and is probably the smallest Thayer's Gull I have seen. The primaries show quite large white parts, and look very close to that of Kumlien's Iceland Gull.

Note the large white and small (grayish) black on the primary. Its quite heavy head streaking is probably more typical for Thayer's  Gull rather than Kumlien's Iceland Gull.
IIts gray of upperparts was quite pale in the field. In flight, it looked as if it were an Iceland Gull from a distance.
